[Paul Family Genealogy]
This is the death notice for Peggy Paul Horn's great-great grandmother, published in the Kansas Agitator, Garnett, Kansas, Friday, 16 December 1898, p. 5:
This was a small-town newspaper—Garnett had a population of 2,078 in 1900—and the obit certainly has a small-town feel. They may only have known her as "Grandmother Paul," but some attempt at a real name would have been nice. There were certainly some who remembered her as Betsy. But people were actually moving away from Garnett in 1898. Even her husband, Perris Augustus, was remembered only by his initials, though this may have been a form of respect. But it seems a bit overly familiar to say that "doubtless, death came as a relief to her." Although it was probably true and maybe this was written by a relative.
From Peggy's Ahnentafel (her ancestor #17):
Elisabeth “Betsy” Monroe b. 9 Oct. 1815, Beaver Twp., Pike or Scioto Co., Ohio; d. 10 Dec 1898, Garnett, Anderson Co., KS .
Her grave in Judy Cemetery, Garnett, Kansas (Anderson County).
